Chapter Twenty-Five
Jonah
“THANK YOU,” said Jonah after the quiet had had a chance to soak into his skin and calm his racing thoughts.
“For what?” Marcus sounded languid, like he’d just woken from a wonderful dream.
“They’re your parents. I didn’t expect you to… to….” Defend him, was the only term that came to mind.
“Don’t worry about it, Jonah. I’ve been dealing with my mother all my life. It took me a while, but I know exactly what she’s like, and I also know how to stop the worst of it.” He shifted on his seat. “It’s fine. It’ll be fine.”
“Rats of evil! She’s going to destroy you, isn’t she?”
Marcus chuckled. “Not anymore.” After a few seconds silence, he continued. “By the way, you’ll notice a heap of money in your account. It’s yours to keep, but I won’t be averse to a small donation to keep me liquid once this shit storm is over.”
Jonah jumped to his feet, startling Tapioca, who leaped to the viewing panel and stuck there like an overgrown spider. “You gave me your money?”
Marcus shrugged. “It was the only place I could think of that she wouldn’t be able to touch.”
“You can’t do that. It’s yours. You have to take it back.”
“Relax, Jonah. I wasn’t using it anyway. I have my pay coming in regularly. It’s not as if I use much of that when I’m on board ship all the time. I’ll soon save enough to live on for a very long time. What I gave to you was nothing.”
“I don’t care. It’s yours. As soon as this is over, you take it back.”
“Okay.” Marcus stood and cupped a hand around Jonah’s cheek. “As soon as this is over, you can transfer it back to me. In the meantime, you can keep it safe from my mother. Okay?”
He was caretaker. That felt better than beneficiary. Jonah could handle caretaker. He nodded. “Okay. I’ll look after it for you.”
Marcus smiled at him, and Jonah found himself smiling back. He couldn’t stop the stupid grin overtaking his face, alien and uncomfortable, but there to stay. Heat rushed from his chest, up his neck, and over his face until he was sure steam was wafting from the top of his scalp. The roots of his hair prickled, and he turned away, glaring at the planet below. Thankfully, Marcus remained silent, and Jonah pulled himself together.
“We’re late starting,” he said reluctantly. Apart from the whole becoming-a-science-experiment thing, Jonah had enjoyed his day with Marcus and Tapioca. It had been quiet and peaceful, with no demands on him to do or be anything other than what he was. He sighed. That couldn’t last. There’d never been a time in his life when someone didn’t expect something from him. Right now he was the Planet Whisperer, and he had a job to do.
Marcus rose to his feet and began unbuttoning his jacket. “Is the footstool in the bedroom?”
Jonah nodded. “Take Tapioca in there too, will you? I don’t know what impact this will have on her.
